Hypothyroidism

Disease description:

If the thyroid gland produces too few hormones, this is called hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones are energy suppliers for many body cells, therefore a lack of these hormones slows down the metabolic processes in the body. Possible causes of hypothyroidism are Hashimoto thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland), removal of the thyroid gland or radiotherapy, iodine deficiency (needed for the formation of thyroid hormones), medication or drugs. The symptoms are typically rather unspecific and can be more or less pronounced: lack of drive, sleep disturbances, hair loss, constipation, weight gain, tiredness, general physical exhaustion, muscle weakness, depressive mood.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

The main way for the development of hypothyroidism is Qi and Yang Deficiency of Spleen and Kidney, and the viscera function is weak. The Spleen is the foundation of Qi. If the Spleen’s Qi is insufficient, the source of Qi is lacking, causing the Five Organs to lose their Nourishment and become weak. When Kidney Qi and Yang decay, there is Waterflooding, the Water flows upward to the Heart and causes Heart Yang Deficiency Syndrome. If the cause of the problem lasts for a long time, the Qi and Blood, Yin and Yang all become deficient.

Possible syndromes causing these problems:

Yang Deficiency

Fatigue, lethargy, cold intolerance, slow bowel movement, pallor, puffy face, water retention, abdominal distension, weight gain, poor appetite, poor memory, dry skin, low libido.
