Tonic Yang (Gui Fu Di Huang Pian / Jin Gui Shen Qi Pian) supports the body when deep coldness, low vitality, weak lower back and legs, and urinary weakness show that Kidney Yang is no longer strong enough to warm and activate the body properly. Zhang Zhong-Jing first recorded this classical formula in Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essentials from the Golden Cabinet) during the Eastern Han Dynasty, 25–220 A.D. Practitioners have long chosen it when the body feels cold, underpowered, and less resilient over time. It remains a trusted choice when warmth, fluid regulation, sexual vitality, and constitutional strength all need rebuilding.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners choose Tonic Yang when Kidney Yang no longer provides enough warmth and drive for the lower body and metabolism. The lower back and legs may ache or feel weak. Coldness may increase in the lower body or abdomen. Urination may become too frequent, too clear, or more difficult to control. Some also notice low libido, impotence, oedema, fatigue, or reduced vitality.
Many choose this formula for low back weakness, urinary problems, oedema, decreased libido, impotence, infertility, chronic kidney weakness, chronic asthma, osteoporosis, and cold-type constitutional deficiency. It suits those who want support when the body feels colder, weaker, and less energised over time.
What makes Tonic Yang so useful is its foundational role. It does not only warm the body. It also helps restore the deeper Yang force that supports fluid metabolism, reproductive function, lower-back strength, and long-term vitality. This makes it a strong choice for natural support when deficiency feels deep, cold, and constitutional rather than short term.
Research on Tonic Yang, also widely studied under the classical name Jin Gui Shen Qi Pian/Wan, has shown encouraging results in chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, infertility, urinary incontinence, low back pain, age-related decline, and broader endocrine and metabolic regulation. Studies have reported nephroprotective effects, better glucose control, support for sperm quality and fertility, and improved urinary control. Research has also highlighted protective effects in ageing-related cognitive decline, along with anti-inflammatory, immune-supportive, and hypothalamic-pituitary axis effects. This helps explain why the formula remains so relevant when deeper Yang deficiency affects vitality, metabolism, and long-term resilience.
Tonic Yang is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Helped very quickly for a yang deficiency, gave me a significant boost of energy in the first few days. Just be careful not to over-tonify, I had an underlying yin deficiency and ended up with excess yang heat after a week of heavy tonification. But it was quickly fixed with some Replenish Essence. Thanks China Herb!
