Cinnamon Formula

A traditional formula for wind-cold, chills, and surface balance

Cinnamon Formula (Gui Zhi Tang) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula used to support the body in the early stages of wind-cold, especially when chills, mild fever, sweating, and sensitivity to wind appear together. First recorded in Shang Han Lun (Discussion on Cold-Induced Disorders) by Zhang Zhong-Jing during the Eastern Han Dynasty, 25–220 A.D., it has been used for centuries to help the body restore balance at the surface and respond more smoothly to changes in weather, cold, and environmental triggers.

When to use it

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cinnamon Formula is chosen when the body’s protective surface feels out of balance. At these times, a person may feel chilled, slightly feverish, sensitive to wind, or stiff through the neck and shoulders. Sweating may be present, but the body still struggles to shake off the discomfort fully.

This formula is often used in the early stage of colds and flu-like illness, especially when symptoms feel mild to moderate rather than severe. It is also valued when the body tends to react strongly to wind, temperature changes, or seasonal triggers, including in patterns linked to hay fever, allergies, and sensitivity at the body’s surface.

Why it stands out

What makes Cinnamon Formula so well known is its gentle and balanced approach. Rather than pushing the body too strongly, it helps restore harmony at the surface while supporting normal temperature regulation and sweating. This makes it especially helpful when the body feels easily thrown off by cold, wind, or environmental change. For that reason, it has remained a trusted formula for generations and is still widely used today.

Research

Research on Cinnamon Formula has highlighted its role in inflammation balance, immune support, and respiratory health. Studies have also explored its value in common colds, hay fever, bronchial asthma, and other patterns where the body reacts strongly to wind, weather, or seasonal change. This helps explain why the formula remains such a trusted option in the early stages of wind-cold and surface-level sensitivity.

Important to know

Avoid Cinnamon Formula in cases  without sweating, or signs such as sore throat, thirst, and pronounced internal heat. Warm rice porridge is traditionally recommended alongside this formula, followed by rest and keeping warm to encourage a light sweat. Contra-indicated in pregnancy
