A traditional formula for sudden digestive upset, nausea, and diarrhoea

External Damp (Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Kou Fu Ye) supports the body when sudden digestive upset brings on nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and a heavy, uncomfortable feeling. It first appeared in Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Tai Ping Era) in 1078–85. Practitioners have used it for centuries when dampness, food upset, summer heat, or sudden climate changes disturb the stomach and digestion. It remains a trusted choice when the gut feels unsettled and recovery needs to happen quickly.

When to use it

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners choose External Damp when external dampness and internal digestive upset appear together. Nausea may come on suddenly. Vomiting or diarrhoea may follow. The abdomen may feel bloated or uncomfortable. Some also notice headache, chills, fever, heaviness in the body, poor appetite, motion sickness, or feeling of being unwell.

Many choose this formula for acute gastroenteritis, food poisoning, traveller’s diarrhoea, motion sickness, hangover, and mild sunstroke. It suits those who want support when the stomach reacts quickly and the body feels heavy, nauseous, and out of balance.

Why it stands out

What makes External Damp so useful is its fast and practical action. It does not only settle the stomach. It also helps the body deal with dampness, digestive disruption, and the heavy feeling that often comes with sudden gut upset. This makes it a strong choice for natural support at home or while travelling, especially when symptoms come on quickly and need early support.

Research

Research on External Damp has shown encouraging results in diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, food poisoning, gastrointestinal flu, and other acute digestive conditions. Studies have reported faster recovery, better symptom control, and strong results in infectious and inflammatory gut conditions. Research has also highlighted its potential value in broader gastrointestinal and immune regulation. Some studies show good results in eczema and fighting fungus infections. This gives External Damp strong modern relevance and supports its traditional use when sudden digestive upset, nausea, and diarrhoea need quick support.

Traditional background

In Chinese herbal tradition, External Damp became especially valued in the humid south of China. Heat, dampness, and difficult travel conditions often caused sudden digestive upset and physical exhaustion. Historical accounts describe how the formula gained its reputation during a military campaign more than 1,000 years ago. During the long journey, thousands of soldiers reportedly became weak and unwell. Symptoms were said to include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, heaviness in the body, and marked fatigue. Local physicians recommended the formula, and it became known for helping restore energy and relieve digestive distress caused by dampness, heat, and exposure. With Huo Xiang as the chief herb, the prescription became known as Huo Xiang Zheng Qi.

Having suffered from gastric issues for a number of years and taking Dexilant and Librax to assist in managing my situation a friend recommended External Damp. It has been so incredibly helpful that I am no longer on Dexilant and my gastric system has improved enormously. Very much a happy customer!!
